Make a wish

In today’s Japan, the number of foreign residents continues to grow. Those living as foreigners may sometimes feel isolated or out of place, while their presence can also unsettle long-standing social norms for Japanese people. Language and cultural differences often create a fog between people, making understanding difficult. Yet refusing dialogue is the worst choice. Make a wish — it may be fulfilled by the next visitor.

"make a wish" is a work about reaching through the unseen fog. Write what you want to express, feel, or protect on a digital ema. Then pick someone another person’s wish and activate it to see their thoughts appear before you. Under the Tree of Wishes, diverse perspectives intersect. Through reading, feeling, and reflecting, this artwork opens a space to imagine a more open and inclusive society together.
