Outside of VR goggles

Kazuma Ishida

This work renders, as video, the bodily movements that a person using a head-mounted display leaves behind in the real world. The video is generated with reference to those movements—for example, the swinging of an arm. Viewers observe both what the video brings into relief and what can only be sensed from the actual body itself. In this way, the piece offers an experience of making the wavering, context-free motions of another person one’s own.

The work focuses on what lies outside the experience sealed within the goggles of a head-mounted display. Seen from the outside, the bodily movements of someone wearing the goggles lack context and instead carry a distinctive rhythm rarely encountered in everyday life. That rhythm is appreciated—through the actual body or through images—as a work in itself. I want viewers to feel that singular rhythm enter their own bodies. There, the experience that ought to have been present is absent, and an experience that ought not to have been there is called forth.
